We must address the mental health and addiction crisis in Knoxville. Again and again, we hear of tragedy in our great City of Knoxville. Monday’s drug induced vehicular homicide on Kingston Pike is another tragic example of a broken system. Throughout our City, our homeless population has exploded and many are struggling with mental health issues that are not being addressed. It is time we elect a Mayor who will put our community first.
“This Monday we had a preventable tragedy when a drug induced individual was revived by our emergency services and then quickly released from the hospital. This person, shortly after release from the hospital, became unconscious behind the wheel of a car and killed a pedestrian. Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim”, said Jeff Talman.
“On Day 1 as Mayor, I will work with the Knoxville Police Department and emergency services to ensure that those who are under the influence of drugs will be remanded and not allowed to leave the hospital until treated and then will go directly to jail”, Knoxville Mayoral Candidate Jeff Talman said. “We continually handcuff our KPD when the handcuffs should instead go on those who abuse drugs, abuse our system, and abuse their fellow law-abiding citizens. We need to focus on preventing crimes and protecting our neighbors, not coddling criminals.”
“We will also immediately address our homeless population in the City”, Talman continued. “We want to help our homeless find adequate shelter and a job. Finding shelter is not enough for many of our homeless. Additionally, we will also help the many homeless who are suffering with mental health issues. We will work with the County and the State to provide more beds and ongoing treatment to help those who are struggling. This is not by any means limited to our homeless population, so many of our neighbors are affected by mental health issues throughout our community. It is time for us to step up to the plate and get more treatment options for anyone needing help.”
