State Rep. Fred Atchley, R-Sevierville, and Sen. Tom Hatcher, R-Maryville, have secured $500,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation of East Tennessee.
This funding is intended to assist those living with epilepsy and their caregivers statewide and support education and awareness programs and services about proper seizure first-aid and different types of seizures.
“Supporting epilepsy awareness is key to improving lives and building a more informed and compassionate community,” Atchley said. “The Epilepsy Foundation of East Tennessee continues to do incredible work advocating for individuals and families affected by epilepsy. I’m grateful to my colleagues in the General Assembly and look forward to the positive impact this funding will have across our region.”
Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions. A seizure happens when a brief, strong surge of electrical activity affects part or all of the brain. Data from the Cleveland Clinic estimates around 10% of people will have at least one seizure during their lifetimes.
“Epilepsy affects countless Tennesseans across our state,” Hatcher said. “This funding is a significant step forward in raising awareness and providing much-needed support for those living with epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation does outstanding work in these areas, and I’m grateful to see these efforts being supported statewide.”
The Epilepsy Foundation’s mission is to lead the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures and save lives, according to it’s website.
The appropriated funds are part of a $59.8 billion balanced budget passed by lawmakers in April. Republican priorities include significant investments to improve academic outcomes, provide disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Helene, enhance public safety across Tennessee and increase funding to address transportation infrastructure needs.
Fred Atchley represents House District 12 which includes part of Sevier County.
Tom Hatcher represents Senate District 2 which includes Blount, Monroe, Polk and part of Bradley Counties.
