On August 18, 2025, at 10:30 AM, Knox County marked a historic moment as Emily Abbott was sworn into office as one of its three Criminal Court Judges. Appointed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Judge Abbott fills the vacancy left by Judge Steven Sword, who was elevated to the Court of Criminal Appeals earlier this year.
Judge Abbott’s appointment is a significant milestone for Knox County, as she becomes the first female Criminal Court Judge since Judge Mary Beth Leibowitz retired. Her swearing-in ceremony underscores a new chapter in the county’s judicial history, bringing diverse representation to the bench. A formal investiture will be held at a later date.
Congratulations to Judge Emily Abbott on her appointment, and we look forward to her contributions to justice in Knox County.
