A Stellar Appointment Rooted in Excellence

Judge Emily Abbott’s journey to the bench is a testament to her deep-rooted dedication to Tennessee’s legal system. Appointed by Governor Bill Lee on August 15, 2025, to serve on the Sixth Judicial District Criminal Court in Knox County, Abbott stepped into a critical role following the elevation of the esteemed Judge Steven Sword to the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals.  This vacancy had left Knox County without a judge in Division I since March, creating a backlog of cases that demanded swift action. True to her proactive spirit, Abbott was sworn in just three days later on August 18, 2025, and immediately began tackling the docket—ensuring justice wasn’t delayed for victims, defendants, or our community. 

Her selection came after a rigorous process by the Tennessee Judicial Selection Committee, which interviewed all applicants and forwarded three finalists to Governor Lee for his final choice.  With over two decades as a prosecutor—most recently as Assistant District Attorney General for the Seventh Judicial District in Anderson County—Abbott brought unmatched expertise to the table. A Vanderbilt University graduate with a Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee College of Law, she earned top honors in her criminal law class and has a proven track record of handling serious cases with precision and integrity. 

What makes Abbott’s story even more inspiring? She’s only the second woman to serve as a Knox County Criminal Court Judge, following in the footsteps of trailblazer Mary Beth Leibowitz.  During her swearing-in, the outpouring of support was palpable: Judge Sword administered the oath, Judge Hector Sanchez helped robe her, and even Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee lent her own robe for the occasion—a powerful symbol of mentorship and solidarity among the state’s judicial leaders.  As Abbott herself reflected, “It was overwhelming, the welcome I received… But I will tell you regardless of gender, all the judges here in Knox County are just ready to work for the people. While I am a woman, I’m a judge first.” 

A Vision for Safer, Fairer Communities

Judge Abbott isn’t just filling a seat—she’s advancing a vision for justice that prioritizes facts over feelings, prevention over punishment, and rehabilitation where it counts. Her prosecutorial background gives her an insider’s view of the criminal justice system, from the courtroom trenches to the policy table. She’s committed to expanding Knox County’s Specialized Courts, which address root causes like addiction and mental health to reduce recidivism and boost public safety.  “Justice isn’t about feelings—it’s about facts,” her campaign site declares. “Every person has the same constitutional right to a fair trial.” 

In a time when our communities grapple with rising challenges, Abbott’s approach—impartial, ethical, and forward-thinking—stands out. She’s already making waves, diving into cases with the efficiency that Knox County needs after months without full judicial staffing.

Mark Your Calendars: The Path to the Primary

As an appointed judge, Emily Abbott now seeks voter approval to continue her vital work. She’ll appear on the Republican Primary ballot on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.  Early voting kicks off April 15 and runs through April 30, giving Knox County Republicans ample opportunity to cast their ballots for a judge who embodies reliability and reform.  (Note: Voter registration closes April 6, so get registered now via the Knox County Election Commission or GoVoteTN app!)
