Last Night in Knoxville: Knox County Clerk Candidates Hit the Campaign Trail

Reported By

Reported On

Last night, the Center City Conservatives GOP Club hosted three of the four Republicans vying to become the next Knox County Clerk. It was a solid opportunity for local conservatives to hear directly from the candidates on issues like efficient government service, taxpayer stewardship, and running one of the county’s most public-facing offices.

The Knox County Clerk’s office handles everything from motor vehicle registrations and business taxes to marriage licenses and public records — so this race matters for everyday Knox County residents.

John Whitehead, Richie Beeler, and John Duncan took the stage to share their visions. (Of course, we were there to cover it for you.)

John R. Whitehead (former Knox County Property Assessor and Marine veteran) emphasized his decades of public service experience and a commitment to steady, transparent leadership in the Clerk’s office.

•  Richie Beeler (current chief of staff in the Clerk’s office and former Knox County Commissioner) highlighted his insider knowledge of the office’s operations and a focus on improving customer service while keeping costs down.

•  John J. Duncan, III (former Knox County Trustee with private-sector experience) stressed fiscal responsibility, efficient management of records and data, and delivering high-level service at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers.

The fourth candidate, Rodney Lane (a longtime courthouse veteran with experience in the Property Assessor’s office), was unable to attend the club meeting. He was instead hosting his campaign kickoff and fundraiser at the Holston Hills Country Club.

I stopped by as the event was getting underway and snapped a few pictures of the gathering. The turnout looked strong, with supporters showing up to back Lane’s bid for the office.

With a Democratic opponent in August, the real contest is the May 5, 2026 Republican primary. All four candidates bring different backgrounds to the table — from longtime courthouse insiders to experienced elected officials — and voters will have a clear choice on who can best run this critical county office with integrity and efficiency.

Stay tuned for more coverage as the primary approaches. We’ll keep bringing you straight to the action with these local GOP events.

What do you think? Want me to adjust the tone (more opinionated, shorter, add candidate quotes if you have them, etc.), expand on any candidate’s background, or incorporate more details from the speeches? Let me know how to refine it.
