East Knoxville Finally Has Access to Chilhowee Park

Today marked an important day for East Knoxville as the gates were officially opened to the portion of Chilhowee Park located between Magnolia Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue.

The community came out in large numbers to celebrate. Numerous yard games were set up, while tents representing various City of Knoxville departments provided information and activities for attendees. Community organizations, including Zoo Knoxville and Muse Knoxville, were on hand to engage families and children. Several food trucks served visitors, while both the Knoxville Police Department and Knoxville Fire Department had displays and personnel present for the event.

The reopening carries special significance given the history of Chilhowee Park. When the park was first established, African Americans were permitted access only one day each year—August 8. That history makes today’s celebration even more meaningful as families from across East Knoxville gathered freely to enjoy a public space that belongs to the entire community.

Just last year, in August 2025, there was a proposal to transfer the property to Emerald Youth Foundation. East Knoxville residents voiced their concerns and stood together in opposition to the proposal. Their efforts helped preserve the property as public park space, and today those efforts paid off as the gates opened and the community filled the grounds.

Despite the summer heat, children and families could be seen playing, visiting with neighbors, and enjoying the park exactly as it was intended to be used. For many longtime Knoxvillians, the property brings back memories of the Tennessee Valley Fair, when midway rides occupied the grounds. In more recent years, however, much of the area had been relegated to storage use associated with fair operations.

Today’s event demonstrated what many residents have been saying for years: this space should be accessible to the public. The turnout was so strong that overflow parking was needed, a clear indication of the community’s desire to use and enjoy this historic park.

Opening Chilhowee Park to East Knoxville residents is long overdue. Judging by the smiles, laughter, and crowds that filled the grounds today, the community was more than ready for its return.
