Farragut Mayor signed a letter of endorsement for a candidate for Knox County Sheriff and authored inaccurately that crime is on the rise. Knox County Sheriff Jimmy J.J. Jones who is not running for Sheriff again, challenged McGill’s assertion. McGill has apologized.

“I apologize for any misunderstanding regarding my comments in endorsing Tom Spangler for Knox County sheriff,” McGill said. “Sheriff Jones and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office do an outstanding job protecting our community and I appreciate the dedication of the men and women serving in law enforcement.”

In a move to distance itself from the Mayor the Town of Farragut clarified the Town’s position.

The town of Farragut said it does not take an official position on any political campaign but the town’s elected officials are free to express their views as private citizens.

McGill using his title as Mayor is using the Town not his status as a private citizen.
