Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, Commissioner Dave Wright, Knox County Solid Waste staff and other elected officials, this Monday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. will cut the ribbon and officially open the Carter Convenience Center located at 8815 Asheville Highway, Knoxville, TN 37924

The facility will open to the public immediately following the ribbon cutting.

Convenience centers are waste and recycling facilities where residents can drop off recyclable materials and dispose of household trash. The Carter center is NOT currently equipped to accept automotive fluids or used cooking oil, but these services will be phased in soon.

The previous Carter Convenience Center was the smallest in Knox County and did not offer comprehensive waste disposal and recycling options. The expansion is more efficiently designed with efforts made to improve participation in recycling programs that increase revenue and help keep taxes low. Industrial compactors have been installed for garbage as well as cardboard and plastics to minimize hauls.

Facility improvements also include pervious pavers for storm water infiltration, modular prefabricated concrete blocks made with recycled concrete and a one-way traffic control design coupled with dedicated turn-in and turn-out lanes to prevent highway backups.
