Mayor Indya Kincannon and other City leaders will observe the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks with an expanded ceremony at a new location this year.

The ceremony will take place at the Delaney Plaza along Stadium Way, just before the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s Memorial Stair Climb.

“Having these 2 meaningful events in the same location, will bring more people together to honor and remember all those whose lives were forever changed on 9/11,” said Special Events Director Kyndra Brewer.  “This is an opportunity for us to broaden our circle of remembrance and to reflect together as a community.”

The ceremony will begin with song around 8:30, and Knoxville Police Department Chaplain Pam Neal will officially welcome everyone at 8:42 a.m. The ceremony will include a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.  At the same time, bells will toll to mark the time hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

The ceremony will also include a formal flag procession down Jackson Avenue, bagpipes, music from the All Souls Choir, and KFD Chaplain Paul Trumpore will deliver the benediction.

Following the memorial ceremony, the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will take place inside the stadium.

The climb will pay tribute to the 343 firefighters who gave their lives at the World Trade Center 25 years ago.
