In a proud moment for East Tennessee and the legal community statewide, Judge Kyle A. Hixson, current Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals Judge and former Knox County Criminal Court Judge, has been selected as one of three finalists for the upcoming vacancy on the Tennessee Supreme Court.

On November 25, 2025, the Governor’s Council for Judicial Appointments convened in Nashville to fill the seat being vacated by Justice Holly Kirby, who will retire on June 30, 2026. Following a public hearing and thorough interviews with applicants, the Council advanced the names of three highly respected jurists to Governor Bill Lee for his consideration:
• J. Ross Dyer
• Kyle A. Hixson
• Shea Sisk Wellford
Judge Hixson’s selection as a finalist is a testament to his exceptional judicial record, deep commitment to fairness, and years of distinguished service both on the Court of Criminal Appeals and in the Knox County Criminal Court. His thoughtful approach to the law, respect for precedent, and dedication to justice have earned him admiration from colleagues, attorneys, and citizens across Tennessee.
As Governor Lee now reviews these outstanding candidates, the entire state joins in congratulating Judge Kyle A. Hixson on this well-deserved recognition. Reaching the final three for a seat on Tennessee’s highest court is a remarkable achievement, and East Tennessee could not be prouder of one of its own.
Here’s wishing Judge Hixson continued success as the appointment process moves forward. Regardless of the final outcome, his inclusion among these finalists speaks volumes about the caliber of judge he is, and the bright future ahead for justice in Tennessee.
