Clean water advocate Renee Hoyos celebrates 19th amendment
KNOXVILLE, TN – Today, Renee Hoyos released a video celebrating the 100thanniversary of Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th amendment.

“Tennessee was key in ratifying the 19thamendment, and we have come a long way. But we still have more work to do,” Hoyos said. “Many women of color continue to face barriers to voting & Tennessee has the 2nd least number of elected women in the country.”
Hoyos here also announced today new, special-edition campaign merchandise in her campaign store – featuring the yellow rose. A portion of the profits from this merchandise will be donated to Women for Tennessee’s Future & Emerge Tennessee – two local organizations fighting to empower women politically.
Tennessee became the final state to ratify the 19th amendment in 1920. Originally, the vote seemed destined to fail, until Febb Burns wrote to her son Harry, a legislator from East Tennessee, and encouraged him to vote for suffrage. After, the 19th amendment passed by just one vote.
During the debate in the Tennessee state capitol in 1920, supporters of suffrage wore a yellow rose to indicate their support. Since her first campaign in 2018, Hoyos’ campaign logo has thus been a yellow rose – to honor the legacy of the long fight for equality & the East Tennessee family who changed the world.
