Investigation Finds Former Middle School Coach Misused School Property and PTSO Funds

An investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has found that a former West End Middle School (WEMS) football coach misappropriated school property and Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) funds. The investigation began after the Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Department of School Audit reported questionable activity.

Investigators determined that the former coach misappropriated a total of $1,363.44 by selling school-owned football equipment and equipment purchased with WEMS PTSO funds, retaining the proceeds, and making personal purchases using the WEMS PTSO debit card. The coach sold football equipment at resale stores and kept $406 in proceeds, used $119.96 of PTSO funds to repurchase certain items, and made 17 personal purchases totaling $837.48 with the PTSO debit card.

The former coach admitted to investigators that he sold WEMS equipment for his personal benefit and used the PTSO debit card for personal purchases.

The results of this investigation were communicated with the Office of the District Attorney General of the 20th Judicial District.

“Schools and support organizations must maintain accurate inventories and act quickly when issues arise,” said Comptroller Jason Mumpower. “Failing to track equipment and delaying the reporting of suspected fraud weakens accountability and increases the risk of loss.”
