Y’all, if Wednesday’s early voting turnout is any indication of how Knoxville’s gearing up for this November showdown, we’ve got a serious case of voter apathy on our hands. I mean, come on—it’s the first full day of early voting for the City Council races and that sneaky half-cent sales tax hike referendum, and folks are treating it like it’s just another hump day at the office. The numbers? Let’s break ’em down, because even a slow news day deserves some spotlight.
According to the Knox County Election Commission’s unofficial tallies released late last night, here’s where we stood as polls closed.
• Downtown West: 229 votes. Not bad for a central spot—folks grabbing lunch at Pelanchos probably swung by. But still, that’s barely enough to fill a Vols tailgate.
• New Harvest Park: 147 votes. Our leafy North Knoxville haven did alright, but with all that fresh air, you’d think more runners would’ve paused mid-jog to mark their ballots.
• Eternal Life Harvest Center: 92 votes. Shoutout to East Knoxville for showing up, but c’mon— this spot’s got heart and history. We need more than a prayer circle’s worth.
• City-County Building: 84 votes. The heartbeat of downtown government, and only 84? That’s like showing up to a barbecue with just enough ribs for the host.
• South Knoxville (Meridian Baptist Church): 48 votes. Oof. Our southern neighbors, you’re tougher than this. Blame the traffic on Chapman Highway?
• Knoxville Expo Center: A big fat zero. Look, I get it—the site’s closed for the first few days of early voting due to some scheduling snafu, but zero’s still zero. It’ll open Monday, October 20, so Northwest Knoxville, redeem yourselves.
Total in-person votes: 600. Add in 328 absentee ballots (those early birds who mailed ‘em in ahead of time), and we’ve got 928 votes cast on the first official day. Early voting kicked off softly on Wednesday the 15th
