Looking Back at Jimmy “J.J.” Jones’ October 2025 Defense in Knoxville Daily Paper

Back on October 21, 2025, when Tyler Whetstone authored and Editor/Publisher Joel Christopher allowed this story to appear in a product of the “#TheBigMetalShedontheHill,” it seemed a bit early to be declaring the matter settled.

For those who do not subscribe and cannot get past the paywall, I’ll provide a few key nuggets.

At the time, former Knox County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Chief David Henderson had already pleaded guilty in August 2025. Sentencing was scheduled for February 2026. We now know that sentencing has since been delayed.

The article began:

“Nearly four years after the words ‘former Knox County Sheriff’ appeared 18 times in a federal indictment…”

Jimmy “J.J.” Jones, the former Knox County Sheriff, broke his silence to condemn the federal investigation.

According to the article:

“Jones spoke exclusively with Knox News, laying out his case that the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office have been after him for years.”

Jones further argued that:

“In Henderson, Jones said, the feds found a target to indict and a clever way to embarrass Jones and thwart his political ambitions.”

The former sheriff made it clear he wanted his side of the story heard.

“I just want the truth to come out. I think this was obviously a case of the weaponization of the FBI. No doubt, 100%,” he said. “They went after me and this was the only way that they could try and get me.”

As expected, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and Henderson’s attorney, Robert Kurtz, declined to comment.

Jones also stated:

“I can assure you 100% if they had any shred of evidence of me doing anything wrong, I would’ve been indicted and placed in jail. No doubt. 100%.”

He added:

“I’m saying that if David Henderson did wrong, he should pay but so should the rest of the people that did wrong also.”

According to the article, Jones maintained that work performed by deputies was done on their own time and never while on the county clock. He also said he reimbursed purchases with cash.

Jones admitted that thermal imagers and a rifle scope were kept at his home for several weeks while he evaluated them. He reportedly told Whetstone he was not impressed with the equipment.

The article further reported that Jones was convinced the Henderson indictment was political. He pointed specifically to the February 17, 2022 indictment date, noting that it coincided with the qualifying deadline for candidates challenging Sheriff Tom Spangler. Jones argued that the timing amounted to election interference.

Jones also referenced U.S. Attorney Doug Overbey’s $100 campaign contribution to Spangler in May 2021 and asserted that Overbey signed off on the Henderson investigation.

As Jones put it:

“It’s a coincidence, and I don’t believe in coincidences.”

Looking back, I found Whetstone’s October 2025 article to read more like a political defense than a retrospective examination of a completed case. Through the benefit of hindsight, we now know the story was far from over, particularly with the subsequent involvement of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

As additional facts have emerged since October 2025, the notion that everything had already been settled appears premature.

That said, it is important to remember a fundamental principle of our justice system. In this writer’s opinion, all 11 individuals involved are innocent until proven guilty by a jury of their peers, whether in Knox County or wherever the cases are ultimately heard.
