Remembering MY Friend, TN State Representative “Charlie” Charles Maxwell Severance

Reported On

On Friday, January 23, 2026, Tennessee lost one of its public servants with the passing of State Representative Charles Severance. News like this has a way of stopping you for a moment, pulling you out of the daily political noise and reminding you that behind every title is a human life devoted to service.

The photo I’m sharing alongside this remembrance was taken years earlier, on January 16, 1995, during the first inauguration of Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist. We watched the ceremony from inside a state office building, looking out as history unfolded below. It’s an unassuming vantage point—behind glass, a bit removed—but one that reflects how much of public service actually happens: quietly, faithfully, and often out of the spotlight.

That day marked a new chapter for Tennessee, just as Rep. Severance had been a part of shaping chapters of his own through ten years of legislative service. Severance served in the 92nd – 98th General Assemblies, (1981-1994). The picture captures a moment in time, but it also serves as a reminder of the continuity of state government—different faces, different eras, same calling to serve the people of Tennessee.

As we reflect on Rep. Severance’s passing, it feels fitting to pair his memory with an image from an earlier generation of leadership. Tennessee’s story is written by many hands over many years, and on this day, we pause to acknowledge one of them.
