In 2018 (before I was on the State Executive Committee) of the Tennessee Republican Party the SEC voted to ask aka instruct the TN General Assembly to close the primaries. The General Assembly has taken no action on closing the primaries, although legislation is presented every year. I can argue both sides of the issue. The SEC has a role, the legislature has a role.

At the April 21, 2023 SEC meeting the members passed a Resoultion on the Covenant School Shooters manifesto.

Whereas public safety is a top responsibility of the government.

Whereas citizens have a right to be safe in their homes and lives.

Whereas public policy must be informed by factual information.

Therefore, be it resolved that the Tennessee Republican Party calls for the release of the manifesto and all public postings of the Covenant School shooter.

Yesterday, August 5, 2023 the SEC was asked to support a Resolution that the Giles County Republican Party has passed. (screenshots below) After some discussion, it was amended to simply ask that the Governor not call a Special Session. A couple of members explained two reasons for supporting this. One was for a Special Session not pass a “red flag” law. Second, was that the extremist on both sides will converge at the Capitol and an unsafe environment will exist. Ultimately, a Resolution passed asking TN Governor Bill Lee to not call a Special Session for both reasons.
