Cedar Bluff Elementary School has transformed its once-dusty or muddy playground into a vibrant, usable turf field, thanks to a generous donation and community support. The school had been fundraising to replace the problematic playground, which alternated between a dust bowl in dry weather and a muddy mess during rain.
Third District Commissioner and Commission Chair Gina Oster, who represents Cedar Bluff, learned of the school’s need and connected with Knoxville businessman Steve Maddox. Maddox stepped up, graciously donating the new turf to the school.
The milestone was celebrated on Thursday with a gathering that included Commissioner Oster, Steve Maddox, CBES Principal Ashley Booher, and the entire student body and faculty of Cedar Bluff Elementary. The event marked a significant upgrade for the school’s outdoor space, ensuring a safe and enjoyable area for students to play.

As a former School Board member representing Cedar Bluff from 2000 to 2004, I was part of the early efforts to support CBES. While the groundwork was laid during my tenure, it’s good to see this project come to fruition years later, bringing joy and opportunity to the students of Cedar Bluff Elementary. I apologize for not working fast enough.
