Knox County Clerk Sherry Witt Explains One Year Car Renewal Changes

Reported By

Reported On

Beginning July 1, 2022 two important fee changes will take effect from the State of Tennessee regarding motor vehicle registrations and titles. These changes will impact both dealers and individual vehicle owners. To ensure that our citizens are informed of the new fee structure, here is a summary of the two changes:

$3.00 Title Fee increase: Effective July 1, 2022 the title fee for vehicles will increase from $5.50 to $8.50. This increase only applies to titles, and not to tag renewals.

One-year waiver of State Registration Fee: Beginning July 1, 2022 the State portion of the vehicle registration renewal fee will be waived. This waiver will be in effect only for Fiscal Year ’22-’23, and will only apply to registration renewals with an expiration date between July 2022 and June 2023. This waiver will effectively create a savings of $16.75 on motorcycles and autocycles, and $23.75 on passenger vehicles and motor homes. Other portions of the registration renewal fee will still apply. Based on the information we have received from the State, here are several important aspects of this temporary waiver that vehicle owners and dealers need to remember:

1) The waiver only applies to tag renewals, and notto new registrations.

2) The waiver can only be applied to renewals that expire between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. If someone brings a June 2022 renewal to the Clerk’s office in July, they will not receive the discount.

3) This change does not take effect until July 1, 2022. Therefore, if those with July (or later) expirations attempt to renew early before July 1, 2022, either in person OR online, they will not receive the discount.
