Knox County School Board Chair Karen Carson announced tonight that she will not accept the Chair position again. The leadership is required to be voted on every September.
Will Vice Chair Lynne Fugate of the Fourth District step up to the Chair position? Will Second District Indya Kincannon another board member that rotates regularly in as Chair (just like Carson) get another turn with the gavel? Will the Board look to one of the three men (33% of the board) to lead the women?
The three men are Thomas Deakins (who served one year as Chair) Mike McMillan or Doug Harris? Selection of one of the three men for board leadership would send a message of diversity to the community about the public education of Knox County.
If not, those that leaves, Kim Sepesi, Pam Trainor, Gloria Deathridge as other options. Sepesi is active in Republican politics and has recently married the son of a prominent Republican family of Knox County. Trainor an active board member and one that does not typically vote in lock step with the group think. So, Sepesi and Trainor would be considered long shots. Although, they would be excellent leaders.
UPDATE: Before the Board adjourned this evening at the workshop. Vice Chair Lynne Fugate announced that she would be happy to serve as Chair since Carson is opting out.
