This morning Wednesday May 14, Knox County Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new elementary school in Farragut.

The 139,000-square-foot building will have capacity for approximately 1,400 students and is expected to be completed prior to the start of school in August 2027. It will include:

  • 68 classrooms;
  • 3 teacher work areas;
  • 2 special education classrooms and support spaces;
  • 2 music rooms;
  • 2 art rooms;
  • a library;
  • a 6,900-square-foot gymnasium with a stage; and
  • an ICC-500 compliant storm shelter that will house approximately 1,580 occupants.

“Knox County Schools is committed to implementing whole-community solutions for our critical infrastructure needs,” said Superintendent Dr. Jon Rysewyk. “This project reflects our future-focused vision to identify strategies that will serve the community for decades to come. I’m grateful for all the stakeholders and families who provided feedback during our input process, and for the outstanding work of our Operations Division to make this groundbreaking possible.”

The new school’s construction is estimated to cost $43.7 million and will be located on Village Commons Boulevard. Merit Construction, Inc. is the contractor and McCarty Holsaple McCarty is the architect.

“Farragut and the surrounding area continue to grow, and this new school is a vital part of making sure we keep pace — not just with numbers, but with the quality our families expect and deserve,” said 5th District Board of Education representative Lauren Morgan. “This new elementary school will help relieve overcrowding, while giving more students access to the kind of learning environment that sets them up for long-term success.”
