The race for Knox County Sheriff is gaining momentum as the Republican Primary on May 5, 2026, approaches. Tonight,, the Center City Conservatives Republican Club welcomed two of the four Republican candidates, Mike Davis and Brent Gibson, to their August meeting, offering voters a chance to hear directly from the contenders vying to replace the term-limited Sheriff Tom Spangler.
A Packed House, Minus Two Candidates
The event drew a lively crowd eager to engage with the candidates, though not all could attend. Bernie Lyon was absent due to a previously scheduled campaign meet-and-greet, while Jimmy Jones was out of town. Despite the absences, Davis and Gibson seized the opportunity to share their visions for the future of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, addressing key issues like public safety, community engagement, and department leadership.
Today at 1:08 p.m. the Knox County Election Commission received an Appointment of Treasurer for Assistant Chief Robert Matt Evans, He intends to run as a Republican, however he is not a bonafide Republican. To run as a Republican candidate, one must have voted in three of the last four State and/or Federal Republican Primaries. Evans has voted in none of the last four according to the voter history, I obtained from the Knox County Election Commission on July 28 through an Open Records Request.
Both candidates brought their A-game, delivering compelling cases for why they’re the right choice to lead the Sheriff’s Office into the next chapter. Videos of their presentations are now available online, Davis here and Gibson here giving voters who couldn’t attend a chance to catch up on the discussion.
The Road to 2026
