Knoxville Helps Celebrate Marble City Yesterday

You may not know that Sutherland Avenue between Middlebrook Pike and Hollwood is referred to as Marble City. Many years ago, marble was taken for the area quarries and then milled near Sutherland and Concord Street placed on the trains and taken where it was used, thus the name of the community “Marble City”.

Yesterday morning City Councilman and Former Mayor Dan Brown read a proclamation of Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero declaring yesterday Marble City Day in Knoxville. The presentation was at the 6,000 pound piece of marble at the Third Creek Greenway that welcomes everyone to Marble City.

Until two pm, a Marble City Festival was held in the parking lot of Marble City Baptist Church. Food vendors, games including  bounce house, a silent auction and desert sales was held.
