Opportunity to Serve: Knox County Ethics Committee Seeks New Member After Family Conflict Prompts Resignation

Knox County residents have a chance to step up and contribute to good governance. The Knox County Commission is accepting applications for a vacancy on the Knox County Ethics Committee, a key body that helps ensure transparency and integrity in county operations.

The opening comes after the Commission’s recent appointee, D.J. Corcoran, stepped aside before serving a single meeting. Corcoran, a retired Knoxville Fire Department captain and well-known community figure, discovered that his sister, Sherry Witt — the current Knox County Clerk (and former longtime Register of Deeds) — is employed by Knox County Government. Ethics Committee rules prohibit members (or their immediate family) from being county employees to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest.

Corcoran, DJ

Corcoran was selected in October for a four-year term but withdrew upon realizing the family connection, demonstrating a commitment to the spirit of the committee’s independence.

Now Accepting Resumes for the Vacancy

The Commission is seeking qualified citizens to fill this one (1) vacancy on the Ethics Committee for a four-year term ending October 31, 2029.

Eligibility Requirement: Neither you nor any immediate family member can be employed by Knox County Government.

If you’re interested in promoting ethical standards in local government, this is your opportunity. The Ethics Committee plays an important role in reviewing complaints, advising officials, and upholding the county’s Code of Ethics.

How to Apply

Resumes must be submitted no later than Monday, December 1, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. Send them via:

•  Mail or hand delivery: Office of the Knox County Commission
Suite 603, City County Building
400 Main Street
Knoxville, TN 37902

•  Phone: (865) 215-2534

•  Fax: (865) 215-2038

•  Email: [email protected]

Key Dates

•  Interviews: Monday, December 8, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. during the Optional Agenda Review Meeting in the Main Assembly Room, City-County Building (400 West Main Street, Knoxville).

•  Appointment Vote: Monday, December 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. during the regular Knox County Commission meeting (same location).

All meetings are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend.

This vacancy highlights why independent oversight matters — even well-intentioned appointees can run into unforeseen conflicts. The Ethics Committee needs dedicated, impartial members to keep county government accountable.

If you meet the criteria and care about integrity in public service, consider applying. Knox County could use your voice. For more details, visit the Commission’s website or contact their office directly.
