AFTER SAWYER’S HATEFUL ANTI-POLICE COMMENTS AND RACIST RHETORIC DIRECTED TOWARD SHELBY COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTIES

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE — The Republican Party of Shelby County unequivocally condemns the racist attacks launched by General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer against our dedicated law enforcement officers, including Shelby County Sheriff Deputies, outside of the Shelby County Courthouse on October 7. Her disqualifying actions, rooted in a history of anti-police rhetoric, erode public trust in our institutions and endanger the men and women who risk their lives daily to protect our communities. As an elected official sworn to uphold justice, Sawyer’s behavior is not only unbecoming but a direct assault on the rule of law in Shelby County.

The Republican Party of Shelby County calls for Tami Sawyer’s immediate resignation as General Sessions Court Clerk and for condemnation of her actions by all responsible leaders. Furthermore, the Republican Party is actively exploring recall options to hold her accountable should she not resign, as such conduct is wholly inappropriate and incompatible with public
office.

This incident is part of a broader pattern among Democrat leaders who consistently undermine law enforcement efforts. Sawyer has recently appeared alongside Mayor Lee Harris in press conferences opposing critical support from the Memphis Safe Task Force to combat crime in Memphis, framing these vital measures as threats rather than solutions. Similarly, District Attorney Steve Mulroy has aligned with Sawyer in addressing the surge in arrests from the Memphis Safe Task Force, and is slated to speak alongside her at an upcoming rally later this month. These associations reveal a troubling anti-law enforcement agenda that prioritizes misguided ideology and politics over public safety.

The residents of Shelby County deserve leaders who support law enforcement officers, not those who vilify them. The Republican Party stands firmly with law enforcement and will continue to advocate for policies that ensure public safety.
